CHAPTER NINE

Cecelia flinched at the sound of her small alarm clock ringing into the early morning stillness, raised her head and blinked, her body unwilling to leave the warmth of Roger’s arms. They had clung to each other throughout the night.

She reached out and banged off the alarm clock. She started to crawl out of bed, but strong fingers encircled her waist.

“Don’t get up,” Roger murmured, and he pulled her back down for a warm, sleepy kiss. “The alarm was for me. I’m driving a car across the border today.” He released her and crawled out of bed, the morning sunlight dappling his naked form. “I wanted to be ready.”

“Yes, I know,” Cecelia said as she threw back the covers and got up, her bare body tingling with the aftermath of their lovemaking. “I have to pick up my car at eight thirty.”

Roger had risen, and now he froze in the middle of taking underwear out of a drawer. “You what?” he demanded.

“I have to pick up my car at eight thirty,” Cecelia replied. She opened a drawer and withdrew her panties and bra. “Can I use the bathroom first?”

“What do you mean? Are you driving a car across?” Roger asked.

“Yes, I’m driving a car across,” she snapped, all her tender feelings fading. “That’s what I was doing in the office with Villanueva last night. I’m going to drive a car across and gather additional evidence. You want to put these guys away, don’t you?”

Her naked body quivered with indignation as she marched to the bathroom and shut the door behind her. She turned on the shower and stepped under it, letting the hot water ease the slight soreness in her arms and legs, but Roger jerked the door open a moment later and stood leaning against the doorjamb.

“Damn it, Cecie, something could happen over there.”

Cecelia scoffed, stepped out from under the spray and picked up a towel. “It’s all yours,” she said, jerking her thumb toward the shower.

Roger got a washcloth out of the cabinet and adjusted the water. “I don’t suppose Villanueva told you that Danny got roughed up last month over there. Brad at least had the decency to tell me to be careful.”

“It…it was probably a one-time thing,” Cecelia said. She’d been trying to convince herself of that, but a little knot of fear tightened her stomach as she dried her hair with a towel.

“Maybe, maybe not,” Roger said. “It could have been nothing, or it could have been somebody trying to give Brad and Villanueva a message. Anyway, this isn’t going to be a walk in the park, Cecelia.”

“I know that!” She shrugged and pulled on a pair of tight jeans. “I’ll be armed.”

“Fat lot of good that’s going to do you,” Roger said.

“What, you think I won’t use it?” she asked, staring directly into his eyes.

He didn’t answer, just said, “Your jurisdiction as an agent ends the minute you drive across that river. You’re nothing over there but a foreigner.”

“Damn you, Roger, don’t you think I know that?” Cecelia demanded.
